Recommended by The Michelin Guide NYC ⇐ ©  With its nourishing global vegetarian cuisine and peaceful Zen-inspired décor, Gobo offers a tasty and tranquil timeout from Manhattan‘s bustle. Muted tones and warm wood accents dominate the airy dining room that is attended by a suitably laid-back staff. Gobo‘s inexpensive menu of "food for the five senses" begins with healthy beverages like freshly squeezed juices and soy milk-based smoothies as well as organic wines. Ambitious starters easily tempt without pushing the vegetarian envelope in the likes ofroti canaiand homemade hummus. Larger plates offer an appetizing Asian influence in satisfying and flavorful vegetable protein dishes such as the healthful stir-fry of ginger-marinated seitan with lightly sautéed kale and steamed rice.

happycow.net, tripadvisor.com, gayot.com ⇐ ©  Gobo, located on a stretch of Sixth Avenue that's seen better days, offers supremely healthy bites at pretty decent prices. This veggie restaurant is an oasis of quiet, and definitely more haute than haphazard. The elegant main dining room, flanked by a long cozy banquette on one side and an open kitchen on the other, is minimalist and befittingly colored in earth tones. The long soy- and seitan-filled menu travels the globe, taking some layovers in Asia. While there are some unappetizing-sounding bits (protein nuggets, for example), the menu boasts slow-cooked Malaysian curry stew, ginger-glazed shiitake, and barbecued eggplant that are ambitiously prepared and presented. Even the most ardent carnivore will be satisfied.

nymag.com - When David Wu and his brother Darryn were growing up, it was a given that they ate all their vegetables—their parents, after all, founded Zen Palate. Clearly, the organic apple doesn't fall far from the tree: After respective stints in the family business and at the New York Restaurant School, the brothers have opened Gobo (Japanese for "burdock root"), a vegetarian restaurant with an open kitchen, an organic juice bar, and—in a departure from their parents' alcohol-free policy—a beer-and-wine license. The meatless menu takes a global turn with tea-smoked soy sheets, white bean-and-cremini mushroom casserole, soy filet with coconut-curry rice, and green tea noodles with vegan Bolognese sauce. — Rob Patronite and Robin Raisfeld
